Winter: Draft #2 and What Happens Next

Posted on: 9th Dec 2013  /   Categorized: Winter

As you may have noticed, I finished the second draft of WINTER, the fourth and final installation of the Lunar Chronicles, just over a week ago. And whoa boy, am I be happy to be out of that draft! This book, you guys. Here’s hoping I can make it epic and awesome before it kills me.

I am happy with this draft, though. Sort of. I think. We’ll see how I feel after I read through it. BUT – while I still feel that there is lots of room for improvement, there are also a lot of parts that make me giddy when I think about them, and how excited I am for you guys to read them, especially the Big Scenes that have been rolling around in my head since I first started coming up with these books.

I know you’re all still holding your breaths for CRESS, but I thought I’d share a little non-spoilery info about WINTER anyway, while it’s all fresh in my mind.

Title: Winter: Book Four of the Lunar Chronicles

Fairy Tale Inspiration: Snow White and the Seven Dwarves

Word count: Top Secret (but it will be the longest book of the series)

# of characters who get their own POV chapters: 11. Unless I’m forgetting some.

Combined months I’ve been working on this book so far: 10

Semi-randomly selected teaser sentence:

“No. She will never be queen.” She swayed toward him, and he felt like he was being encircled by a python, smothered and choked.

(Dun dun dun . . .)

So, What Now?

Unfortunately, my second drafts are still usually a long ways from being finished, and this book is no different. At this point, I have dozens of notes left for myself throughout the manuscript—word choices I want to clarify, descriptions I want to add, things I need to research. So that’s what I’m working on this week while I’m still in Nano-recovery mode.

Then I’ll start reassessing the bigger picture items and figuring out ways to fix the still lingering issues that I have with plot, characters, and themes.  In particular, there is one subplot that I am really unhappy with at this  point and I know I need to give it some serious consideration before the next round. There were also a few subplots that got pushed aside in this draft that I need to bring back to the forefront and tie in to some of the other major plot arcs.

Once I’m satisfied (more or less) with those big elements, I’ll conduct a read-through to check for general consistency, before sending it off to my editor and beta readers for feedback.

With any luck, this will happen before the Cress tour kicks off in February! *fingers crossed*

Intriguing teaser sentence, and I can’t wait to read this book. Also, 11 different POVs? Wow.

  2. Christine commented on:

    11 POVs?!?! That is incredible!

Best of luck fixing the lingering issues! 😀

  3. Adele commented on:

YAY! Can’t wait. Make it THICK.

  4. Charity commented on:

Good luck with your writing! And 11 POV’S?? And that teaser sentence! I’m going to die from all the awesomeness! 🙂

  5. Christel commented on:

AHHHH! I’m seriously SO excited for the next two books. I’m kind of squealing as I write this and my family is looking at me like I’m crazy. Which I am…FOR THIS BOOK. Wow. Also, I love the teaser sentence. I love all of this. YAY!

  6. memyselfandbooks commented on:

Wow… I’m going to die from awesomeness…11 POV’S… this will be SUPERCALIFRAGILISTICEXPIALIDOCIOUS!

I’m guessing that the quote is from Kai’s POV and he is talking with and thinking about Levana.

Can’t wait for Cress and Winter to come out. Can you please publish both of them on February so I can read them back to back? I know I am greedy but all this waiting is making me sleepless. Gaaah!

Want to know more about Winter, Marissa. 😀

  9. Brett commented on:

I am sooooooooo excited!!! I just finished cress and it was absolutely amazing. You are a goddess with words. I am the biggest hopeless romantic so I love all the the strong characters and their partners, it is almost too much for my heart to handle! I cannot wait till Winter comes out but to keep myself occupied throughout the year I will just have to read Cinder, Scarlett and Cress over and over. 🙂 😀

  10. Samwise commented on:

It feels so weird, I found Cinder when it first came out and fell in love. After waiting a year for Scarlet and then a year for Cress, I thought I learned some patience. I have never been more wrong. Just finished Cress and I am going CRAZY for Winter. Please don’t pull a Martin and not put this out for a few years. Because I will die. And become a crazy stalker ghost. YOU ARE AMAZING THESE BOOKS ARE AMAZING AHHHHH

  11. Alicia commented on:

Maybe in the teaser sentence, Levana is with Kai? I don’t know, so don’t judge!

  12. Madelyn commented on:

I can’t wait till it comes out, school library got Cress today. Checked it out, read a page, love it!

  13. Sana @ artsy musings of a bibliophile commented on:

This makes me so happy because Snow White and yay for Winter being the longest book! =D

  14. Karisma commented on:

i am heartbroken because of the ending of cress…kai and cinder are a match right??? dose anybody knoww when winter comes out

  15. Kristin commented on:

This is one of the most engaging series I have ever come across!!! The plot just keeps getting more and more interesting and intriguing with twist and turns along the way. I found myself wanting more and more for Cinder to tell Kai her secret so he would understand and empathise with her. Finically towards the end of Cress that happened and was the most magical moment, however it was right at the end, left me craving more!!! I’m not sure if I can wait yet another year for Winter as I am just so determined to find out what happens next, between Kai and Cinder, Thorne and Cress, wolf and scarlet, and the group against Levana, and of course the unknown story of Winter, I am assuming princess winter briefly introduced in Cress. I’m increasingly excited to learn spoilers along the way about Winter as I can’t bear another minute without knowing what events the group encounter and how it pans out between them and Levana. Fingers crossed Winter comes out on schedule (even sooner would be fantastic) 🙂

  16. Lily commented on:

OMG if I count 8 main leads then queen Levana , 9, who are the last 2 POVS? Though I don’t think there will be 7 POVS for each dwarf so that could be one and the last one. But I now realize why you chose Snow White since I was looking at it from my POV as I hated the story not her. Evil Stepmom is the Queen Levana. I kind a miss the animals that help these heroines like mices, forest animals, etc so I was wondering if there ware any animals in the moon?

  17. Aivah commented on:

Are the dwarves her pets? Because if so u don’t think Scarlet is THAT short. (Just teasing)

  18. Jen commented on:

Marissa, please take all the time you need to get this as perfect as you want. Although I would love to have the book RIGHT NOW, I’d want it to be just the way you want it, which is most excellent for the rest of us. I hope they make a movie out of this series!

  19. Mackenzie commented on:

I can’t WAIT for Winter!!! MARISSA, YOU ARE THE BEST WRITER EVER!!!!! Please come out with more teasers!!

  20. yoko commented on:

Okay, you made the desperate feeling worst! But calmed down a little knowing that you are working hard and non-stop about it!

  21. cherry m commented on:

let me know when WINTER publish… please?

  22. Brenda commented on:

I originally got Cinder for my Aspergers daughter to read….she is not a girly girl but I felt these strong female characters would be powerful role models. I decided to read Cinder myself to gauge the suitability of the story….well I have finished all three, and I have loved each book!!! My daughter wasn’t quite ready to tackle them yet….but in about a year she will….she is a very confident reader but being only 10 years old she was unsure, the book cover of Cinder freaked her a little. We have talked about the books so she knows each fairy tale angle and is a Star Wars fan….so that’s why I purchased your books.
I want you to know this isn’t my usual genre….and I am over 45 years old and just enjoyed your writing style and imagination.
    Winter… coming!!!

  23. Emma commented on:

I am so excited for winter!! I read the first three books in four days, they were soo amazing!!!

  24. Alex commented on:

Just finished Cress last night. I AM FREAKING OUT! I’m so excited for Winter because, of course, I can’t wait to know what happens next. But at the same time, I’m thinking about how painful it’s going to be when I read and finish Winter, since it is the last in the series. NOOOO, I DON’T WANT IT TO END.

  25. Kristen commented on:

i read all three books in four days!!! and wow this is the best book series i have EVER read in my entire life!!! i just love all of the sweet couples. then i go all fan girly around my friends and they look at me like -.- what is she on about…. and every kiss parts in the book just make my heart go all fluttery <3

Thank you sooooo much Marissa for your amazingly AWESOME book writing skills… i cant wait till the blurbs and teasers come out!! and by the time winter comes out im gonna need to read the entire series again just to put me in the zone again <3 i wish i could go into the future and read winter, its going to be MASSIVE

love every single book of yours…. Kristen 🙂

  26. Your Name commented on:

OMG!!! I love this series and can’t wait for Winter to come out. I think the Lunar Chronicles should be a movie series. That’s just my opinion

  27. Your Name commented on:

So excited can’t wait!!! These books were the best! I have a friend who doesn’t like reading and she said that everyone was reading these books and that they looked interesting to her.

  28. Alicia commented on:

Since all the other covers have had red in them (Cinder’s shoe, Scarlet’s hood and Cress’s hair tie) I think the cover for Winter will be someone’s hand on the floor next to an apple.

  29. Your Name commented on:

OMG! I read cress it was amazing and 11 POVs!!!!omg can’t wait these books are amazing!!!! Big big fan!!!!! Make Winter THICK!!!!!!!

  30. Ani commented on:

How can I become a beta reader?!
    Please tell!
    I need to read winter!
    Or else I’ll go cray-cray!

  31. Chelsea commented on:

I’m gonna cry!!! I’m rereading Cinder and Scarlet before i read Cress (which I’m gonna buy tonight) and I DONT WANT IT TO END!!! It’s sssssooooooo good. I really hope Levana dies…. she’s the embodiment of evil ( to me at least). I can’t wait to read Cress and Winter! If this were a movie/TV series i would never stop watching it…. OMGOMGOMGOMG….. I love the futuristic take on traditional fairy tales, the view that they don’t have to be proper fragile girls or princesses and they’re not perfect, that wouldn’t be fun. hahahahahaa.

Quick Question: After you finish the Lunar Chronicles completely, whats your plan for another book or series?
Like will you continue on in this direction or will you go for something opposite (not non-fiction hopefully)… 😀 🙂 😀 😀

  32. Kaylee commented on:

I honestly can’t wait to read this book! I really love this series!!! Argh… waiting is so hard… I’m sure it will be amazing though so its worth it! I feel like the teaser sentence is maybe Levana telling Kai that Cinder will never be queen. I don’t know. Usually references to snakes are meant to be evil in literature, so the whole queen thing seems sinister to me. Well that’s my guess.

  33. Alex commented on:

Oh pretty please hurry up and get this book out!!! I’m dying in the wait!!!!

  34. Amy commented on:

I am so invested in this story it’s not healthy. I NEED Winter. Can’t wait for the release!

  35. Sydney commented on:

Finished Cress for the FOURTH time yesterday. I am about ready to rub lamps in hopes that a genie will appear and make it 2015 so I can read Winter and Fairest. Luckily, it says Winter is long so I will be occupied with it for a bit longer than the others. 🙂

  36. Romy commented on:

Omg!!! Can’t wait!!!!! I love the lunar chronicals winter seems a bit insane ( but that’s ok I love insane!!! ) but is it the last book? ( tear drop…)

  37. Emily commented on:

I started the lunar chronicles last week and just finished Cress!!!!!!!!! Ohmygosh!!!! I’m not sure if I love you for writing these AMAZING books or hate you because you’re making me wait until January to read about my new family!!!! You are so creative to even think of these plots!!! All hail Princess Selene!!!

  38. Haley commented on:

I really wish your books were people so i could take them off and marry them. I am soooo in love with all the books. Cinder and Kai together are my favorite moments in the entire thing I totally ship them. I think that i am slowly dying because i have been without them for 24 hours. life is so empty without the lunar Chronicles. I sometimes break down and cry in my room because i know i will have to wait a year and a half for winter and then it will be over.
thank you so much for sharing your talents with the world. i love everything about your books. please keep writing so i might stay alive. frankly, i would read your shopping lists. 🙂

I honestly have to say that this is the best bunch of books that I’ve read in a while…and I read a lot. You have an amazing ability for making words jump off of pages of simple ink and paper come to life. Your words give voice to amazing things, and I can’t tell you how very happy I am that you decided to share your talent for word weaving with everyone. I am kinda chomping at the bit waiting for the last installment of this outstanding series of stay-up-all-night-to-get-to-the-end books. No pressure!! 😉 Don’t quit until you’re happy with it, and the rest of us will be simply ecstatic.

It better be! Else I’ll be in a mayor retreat symptoms case. 🙁

  43. zoe commented on:

I am really starting to hate these books. I have read the entire series like 3 times now and I am starting to think it is an obsession. Please release winter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am going to die if I don’t read it soon. I just love this series so much.

  44. jada commented on:

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i have read cress and so cant wait for winter! i absolutely love these series. its an obbsession. my favourite couple is wolf and scarlet. they are just so…….perfect! i almost lost mind wanting to know if wolf will save scarlet and that they will officially a couple. marissa, you are the best writer ever. never stop writing. and please make winter long, extra long. you need to solve hanging problems. but please dont make us wait to long or i’ll go cray cray. trust me. i wish i had a time machine so i could go to the future to get winter( fingers crossed} and 11 POVs. list them please.

HI! I am so confused with the order of which the books go in. Isn’t it Cinder, Scarlet, Cress Fairest, then Winter?

Oh m’ gosh! The teaser sentence! Who. Is. Speaking?
    Levana’ about winter
    Winter about Cinder
Or…. The other way around. But I doubt Cinder would say that. Eeeeeeeeekkkkkk!!!!!!!!! I’m excited all over again!

  48. Sarah commented on:

I wish you the best of luck in all your writing endeavors, Mrs. Meyer!

I am SO excited for Winter! I’ll be attending your Phoenix AZ Fairest book signing event on February 2nd; I can’t wait to have the chance to meet you! Fairest will definitely make the wait for Winter easier, but I’m still agonizing over the thought that we’re still nine or ten months away from it :'( I saw on goodreads that Winter will be 800 pages?! Whoa! I’m really glad for that as it means I won’t have to leave the story too soon. 🙂 That teaser sentence is also killing me, and I’m going to guess for the sake of the discussion below your blog post that it’s Levana talking to Kai? That’s what it most sounds like at least. Also — do you know around when the cover will be revealed? I’m sure it will be gorgeous!!

P.S. I’m so grateful to you for creating this series. Actually, I have been studying Chinese for a long time now (I’m not actually Chinese myself) and I really appreciated the Chinese culture and language nudges in Cinder.

  49. Cherokee Corbin commented on:

You should totally make the books into movies!!!!!!!!!!! That would be the best day of my life☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️. If you do send me a notification. Please that way I know what to get for my birthday!!!!!!!!!!

  50. Megan commented on:

It’s impossible for me to wait three more months until Winter comes out!!!!! Also may ask when might Winter be available in Canada? Holding my breath until that day!!!

  51. Genesis G. commented on:

OMG! I’m like having a fangirl attack! I’m an eighth grader, and I came across your first book Cinder in sixth grade. I FELL INLOVE. Cinder left me yearning for more, but sadly the librarian didn’t have Scarlet, she just had Cress and Cinder*tears*. Then I recommended it to my friend last year, she LOVED it too! Then she bought the first three books, and she let me borrow Scarlet, which got my toes curling and my mind reeling! Finally I finish Cress at a party last weekend#IHAVENOLIFE, and I almost died from all the suspense! I can’t wait to read Queen Levana’s P.O.V, and I definately can’t wait to read Winter! THXS SO MUCH!
