Listen to a Clip from the CRESS Audiobook (then enter the giveaway!)

Posted on: 16th Jan 2014  /   Categorized: Cress

I *might* be biased, but I’m fairly certain that I have the most talented audiobook narrator in the history of… audiobooks. Rebecca Soler is AMAZING, deftly weaving in accents and voices for, oh, about EIGHT BILLION CHARACTERS. There are times when I’m writing a scene with lots of characters and feel legitimately guilty when I think about poor Rebecca, but she handles it with so much talent and energy and I just . . . I am really, really impressed.

The CRESS audiobook releases the same day as the hardback – February 4! You can pre-order it now wherever audiobooks are sold.

I use audiobooks to “reread” books. I usually don’t have time to actually read them again but I do have time to listen to them.

  2. KT commented on:

I listen to audio books all the time. Usually to re-read, especially if I am trying to refresh before a new book in a series comes out. Sometimes, I will listen to a book for book club that doesn’t sound interesting on paper, since I listen while I clean I make a lot more progress than I would otherwise. I also listen just because! Books are the best.

  3. Katherine commented on:

Audiobooks allow me to “read” throughout the day. I listen to them while I’m commuting, doing chores, crafting, etc. I especially like listening to books I’ve read before so that if I zone out I’m able to come back to the book while still knowing what’s going on.

  4. Mirage commented on:

Audiobooks gives you the chance to relax, listen & imagine, at the same time it allows you to do multiple chores while enjoying your favourite book, if you are driving or even doing homework you can still enjoy your favourite book. personally i listen to audiobooks when am too exhausted to read the actuall book .

  5. Michelle @ In Libris Veritas commented on:

Audiobooks let me ‘read’ when I’m doing other things, it’s literally the closest I can get to automatically downloading the book to my brain. :P

  6. Rita Boyle commented on:

I LOVE audio books. They make it easier to get through more books while I’m driving from home to job to job to home. Makes the driver so much more enjoyable.

  10. Miss Wisp commented on:

They’re perfect for re-reading. There’s always time to LISTEN to a book while going about your day but there’s hardly ever time to actually sit down for a re-read.

Thanks so much for this opportunity, Miss Marissa. I’m SO excited fro Cress!

I can listen to them in the car, with my mom :) She enjoys the series as well.

  13. Dana commented on:

I adore Rebecca Soler’s narration for this series. With a small baby, I can’t read physical books as often or as quickly as I used to. So I live and die by audiobooks. And when you have a good reader, it completely makes the story. I read the first 5 chapters of Cress, and now I’m DYING get my hands on the book/ears on the audiobook. So sign me up. I NEED IT!!! :)

  14. Katie commented on:

They are the best way for my best friend(she’s blind) to read the books as well so I have someone to fan girl with (: I get the hardcovers and she gets the audiobooks

  15. Erin commented on:

I love these books and I have to say they are my favorite audiobooks thanks to the narrator. I love to listen when I am out running or when I’m working around the house. No more having to choose between doing chores and reading a book (not that it was much of a choice :) )

I don’t listen to audiobooks but this will be perfect for me. I am always rereading these books but I never have time so it would be easier to listen to it. I am dying to get my hands on Cress and being able to listen to it when I cant actually read it will be very helpful. I am always running around so being able to “read” it when I cant actually read it will be amazing.

  20. Matthew W commented on:

Great for a trip up North. Way up north.

  21. G. Donald Cribbs commented on:

My first audiobook was I HUNT KILLERS by Barry Lyga, and that added a zillion times more tension to the book. Not to mention I was driving alone in the dark, listening to details of a serial killer, but I digress. Since then, my love of audiobooks has grown.

That was an amazing “read.” Highly recommended! But, CRESS is so much less stabby. :D

  22. Geri commented on:

I love listening to audiobooks because it allows me to keep enjoying new books even if I don’t have the time to sit down and exclusively read a physical book. I can listen in my car on the way to work, during lunch break, etc.

  23. Susan T. commented on:

I like listening to audiobooks because I spend a lot of time on the computer and my eyes get tired! I love being able to close my eyes, relax and listen to a book!

I’ve never really listened to an audiobook. But I am very curious and would love to listen to this! Thank you.

  28. Morgan C. Mittelbrun commented on:

The book really comes to life. I’m currently re-listening to SCARLET for the read-a-thon before CRESS comes out! I’ve listened to many audiobooks now and realize that it’s a different kind of experience. While reading allows you to think and imagine about the characters, settings, and plot, audiobooks let you relax your eyes and open up your mind to manifest the characters in your mind’s eye. The reader uses their voice talents to imprint the character’s voices into your mind better than any book could, taking the author’s words and making them come to life. I really hope I get this audiobook! I just listened to the first chapter of CRESS and fell in love with the voice of Cress & Little Cress and cowered at the voice of Sybil Mira. The characters feel even more real to me. Audiobooks are the bridge between a book and a movie but so much more than that. Instead of watching a movie, you take the images you’ve seen in life and morph them into a world all your own that can unfold itself in your head. Reading is a personal experience but audiobooks open you up to interact with the characters, feeling like you are living and breathing with them when hearing their words.

  29. FloeticFlo commented on:

I don’t like morning or drive home radio, so audiobooks it is!

I love audio books cause you can relax while reading!!

  32. Yan Ling Chen commented on:

I love listening to audiobooks because they allow me to listen to my fave books while I am working, making a blog post, or relaxing. It is much more convienient to have around the house than a hardcover or Kobo and provides me with a hands free experience!

  33. Xander commented on:

  37. Darith L. commented on:

I listened to the Divergent audiobook before I go to sleep, and it was one of the best reading experience I’ve ever had! It was like I was watching a movie within my own head. Lines after lines painting the world in my mind. :D

Well I can’t see and they take forever to come out in Braille books lol

  43. Rebekah Gyger commented on:

I actually don’t enjoy audio books, but my mom does, and I just got her hooked on the series and so I think it would be cool to win it for her. She never has time to just read, and this is something she can listen to on the way to work.

  44. Amy commented on:

I love audiobooks because they great for on the go. Sometimes I like to read and listen at the same time. When a book is really good like Cinder and Scarlett I don’t want to let go of the story just because I have to do something as mundane as drive myself to work.

  45. JULIAA commented on:

They’re amazing for on the go… CAN’T WAIT FOR CRESSSSSS!! AHHHHH!

  46. Jessica commented on:

I’ve never tried audio books before. I’d love to give to with a book from a series I already love.

  47. Rachel D. commented on:

Audiobooks make my day!!! I spend a lot of time in the kitchen due to food allergies. They make daily chores so much easier. -I own the Cinder and Scarlett audiobooks. The narration is amazing. -Some of my favorites !!!

  48. Alyssa commented on:

I love audiobooks because they make it easy to multitask while listening to them. Sometimes it’s hard for me to find time to read “paper books”, and audiobooks are a great solution to that problem.
    Super excited for Cress!!!

  49. emi commented on:

OMG don’t even get me started! I love this series. I’m glad you’re having such awesome luck with the publishing of your books.

I love audio books in the car! It just gives that extra little comfort while driving to work and back knowing I have those extra few minutes to indulge.

  51. Scarlet commented on:

I love audiobooks because I can listen to them in the car and you can listen to them while doing other stuff. And omg it would be soooo cool to win this!

  52. Sarah commented on:

So cool! I just finished listening to the Scarlet audiobook a few days ago. I like listening to them while I do dishes and while I knit, since that way I can enjoy my favorite books while I work.

  53. Janelle Leonard commented on:

So excited for CRESS! Loved listening to the first chapter! Thanks for sharing.

  54. Allison commented on:

I love listening to audio books because i can listen to them in class or anywhere else especially since it gives you a bonus listening to audio books when you are doing chores that you hate.
But more likely because when I exercise on the bicycle i can listen to it instead of reading it and have to worry if i will slip off and get a scratch, which did happen one time. -_-
At least the action scenes will encourage me to imagine that I’m fighting off my calories quickly.

  55. Alana commented on:

I listened to Scarlet and *loved* the performance. And, of course, it made me want to get my hands on Cress immediately, but, of course, there’s still the wait…

  56. Michelle Bitner Smith commented on:

My family loves listening to them on road trips.

  57. Kay commented on:

I’m not much into audiobooks, but Rebecca is very good as a narrator.

I’m curious, though – so far all of the cover art for the Lunar Chronicles have included something predominantly red. Is there some meaning to that color (in your mind, Marissa) or is it just a vivid, eye-catching color (it’s effective in that sense, certainly)?

  58. Alana commented on:

I love using audiobooks whenever I’m on the move, particularly on the way too and from uni everyday – it’s not too easy to walk with a book in hand (and pay attention to where you’re going!) but it’s a lot easier to listen to one!

  59. Olivia G. commented on:

I love audiobooks because I actually think it is cool to listen to other people read and hear how they hear the book. It also makes it a lot easier to multi-task. Reading while cooking a snack, or walking around is a serious challenge. So audiobooks makes this a lot easier to do.

  60. Mary commented on:

    1. I have an hour-long commute. I found myself getting too road rage-y when I listened to music. Audiobooks have a soothing effect on me. I feel less angry when I stop at lights or traffic is slow because I get to hear more! 2. They’re a great way to reread books that I don’t have time to physically read AND they’re a good way to catch back up with a series when it’s been a while since the last installment. I actually recently listened to Cinder and Scarlet so this giveaway has me super excited! Thank you so much, Marissa!

  61. kat commented on:

I often like reading books myself more than audiobooks. I can actually imagine the scenes themselves and sometimes, the person reading the book doesn’t sound right to me. HOWEVER, I do really like some audiobooks. The voice is just puuurfect for the book and the characters! Audiobooks are also goode for nights when you’re suppose to have all lights off and sleeping. It’s like a really good bedtime story. Can’t wait for Cress!

  62. Mark commented on:

I love listening to audiobooks while out jogging. It keeps my mind off the sweat and hard work! Plus I have more time to listen to books than I do to sit down and actually hold the book in my hands. Combined with awesome narrators makes for pure nirvana

  63. Lee commented on:

Rebecca Soler IS an amazing narrator! I am a huge audiobook fan, been through about 70 this year. She has a charming versatility!

Cress is already pre-ordered through audible…but thanks for the tease!! ^__^

  64. Maja (The Nocturnal Library) commented on:

I like audiobooks because a good narrator can breathe that extra bit of life into a book and make a good read downright spectacular. Judging by how you described Rebecca Soler’s work, she’s one of the really good ones, which makes me super excited about this.

  65. Ryan commented on:

I haven’t actually read any audiobooks before. But, I would love to be able to listen to Cress while doing chores, long car trips, etc.

More importantly, it’s Cress! I’d love listening to any and all audiobooks if they were all as good as Cress is.

  66. Veronica commented on:

I never listened to audio books but I find the concept very interesting and would love to try it one day :)

  67. Vans commented on:

I go back and forth on the subway about 3 hours every day; listening to audiobooks is one way to pass the time without putting in too much effort.

  68. Susan Light commented on:

With audiobooks, I get to read one and listen to another. Twice as many books read that way. And sometimes the performances are really good.

  69. Brittany commented on:

I love audiobooks because they allow me to read at work!

  70. anna commented on:

I love audiobooks because if you don’t have time to sit down with a book you can just listen while you are doingsomething else like working out, or cookig. I usually like to go to listen when I’m going to class.

  71. starryeyedjen commented on:

Audiobooks are just about the only way I’ll *ever* have a chance to catch up on all the books I want to read. Plus, even more than a standard book, audiobooks just have this ability to transport me to the setting of the story. A great narrator can make a story even better, and I wholeheartedly agree that Rebecca Soler is one of the best.

  72. Carina Olsen commented on:

I.. actually haven’t listened to any audio books before (A) So this would be the first :D And I loved Cress so much, so I would love to listen to the audio book. <3 Thank you so so so so much for this amazing giveaway :)

  73. Sarah commented on:

I like audio books when I’m on along road trip or when my hands are busy.

  74. Lucy commented on:

Audiobooks are my preferred reading method these days and allow me to read even when I’m busy with other things. I love Rebecca Soler’s performance of this series and have even followed her to other books since she is such a trusted narrator. Can’t wait to listen to Cress!

  75. Kris commented on:

I love listening to audio books because I like hearing how a narrator brings each character and story to life. I sort of “look at” the artistic choices they make and love when they come up with new voices and expressive styles for each character. I also really adore hearing good voice work – I totally have a fangirl thing about quality voice actors. AND audiobooks are super handy for exercising to – they keep me focused on something other than ‘errgh, the agony, the agony!’

P.S. Whoa, that was an amazing clip! I LOVED Rebecca Soler’s style. I am now even more excited for the book release :D

  76. Michelle commented on:

Audiobooks are wonderfully beautiful things for commuters. I have a 1 hour commute one way each day, so audiobooks keep me company as I drive to work everyday. I am so excited for Cress!

  77. Katherine commented on:

I fell in love with audiobooks a few years ago because I don’t always have enough time to cuddle up with a physical (or digital) copy of a book. They allowed me to keep up with my reading while working on art assignments or cleaning. Then, I fell in love with the feeling of having someone reading to me, just me. Having grown up on books and a healthy dose of NPR’s A Prairie Home Companion, I love storytelling with engaging voices. It provides a different kind of immersive experience.

  78. Rade Almudaffar commented on:

I haven`t read the series yet, but I plan to do that soon. I have read a couple of positive review that convinced me to read the series:-)

  82. Aliaa El-Nashar commented on:

I spend a lot of time going to and from anywhere, traffic here is horrible, so having an audiobook to listen to would be a great way to spend the time. Plus, I’m a natural born multitasker , I like doing more than one thing at once, and this helps immensely.

  83. Tiffany commented on:

I listened to both Cinder and Scarlet on audio book, so I would totally geek out if I got to listen to Cress on audio book too!

  84. MariMermaid commented on:

I love listening to audiobooks to reread books.

  85. Amy Hindle commented on:

I love listening to audio books because it gives me a chance to be read to again, like when I was a little kid.

I love listening to audiobooks because it is so relaxing and and I can do other things while I’m listening, like taking a walk with my dogs:)

  96. Victoria commented on:

i don’t normally listen to an audio-book but I guess I do know

  97. Pauline Q. commented on:

Audiobook makes imagination more vivid :))))
Hearing it felt like the characters are telling you their stories and you literally hear it :D

  98. Cee commented on:

I have only gotten into audiobooks recently. My first impression was that I did not like to have another person doing the narrating, if it is not me. It just sounded off, but after listening to a few more audiobooks it grew on me, and became more convenience when I wanted to listen to it on the car. What’s not to love?

  99. Scarlet commented on:

I don’t usually listen to audiobooks, but after listening to chapter 1 of Cress, I really want to listen to the rest. She does such a great job with all the different voices!!

  100. Jemimah C. commented on:

I’ve only heard a couple of audiobooks, but I think they’re quite fascinating. The narrators often breathe a different kind of “life” into the characters, the dialogue, the whole story—and that makes the mental imagining even more enjoyable and vivid.

  101. Olivia H commented on:

One of the reasons why I listen to audiobooks is because I like hearing the ‘voice’ of the story. Listening also doesn’t take as much time to read the actual book (I’m a slow reader) and plus, listening to audiobooks are better for your eyes! :D

  102. Lizik P commented on:

OMG, I have “read” this series all thru Audibooks, and I LOVE it — because I can listen while I drive to work, while I work out at the gym or go running… and the narrator is pretty awesome. :)

  103. Cassy H commented on:

I don’t like audiobooks . . . but my sister – who has much less time than me – does. So this entry is for her :]

  104. Pamula T commented on:

Im a huge fan of re-telling of old fairy tales…I mean come on! Its like the first book you read growing up. I love these books! I really thought Cinder was going to be an “obvious” story and I was completely wrong! (excuse the poor grammar ) I just couldn’t put it down I would read it in the car and my boyfriend whos not much of a read would ask me for updates alllll the time. When it came to Scarlet I loved the way they crossed each other without knowing that they did. I also love that Scarlet and Cinder have way different personality’s. And when I say Im excited for the net one IM EXCITED FOR THE NEXT ONE! your work is amazing please keep going.

  105. Pamula T commented on:

I so thought I added this… But yes I do use audiobooks … I do love them….it really helps when I have my daughter asking me to spend some time on the floor with her and her toys…when driving….and I work in the dark theater back stage so having one headphone in my ear is much better than a flashlight that can be seen off stage…but I still love the touch of a hardcopy.

  106. Jennifer commented on:

I love listening to audiobooks. I listen when I clean or whenever I’m laying around, I find it relaxing

  107. Brenda commented on:

I don’t use audiobooks. I’ve been wanting to. So this might be my first time if I win this. I would use it to reread books because I like having the physical copy in front of me, easier to hide my emotions when I’m reading out in public. Thank you for the Giveaway!

  108. Queza De Santi commented on:

I’m a neophyte at audiobook-reading, but they definitely make the commute a lot more interesting (productive). ;)

  109. Annabeth C. commented on:

I AM SO EXCITED FOR CRESS TO COME OUT!!!!! My God, and this is only the beginning. Once I actually have my hands on the book, there’ll be even MORE caps-lock and fangirling.
I love audiobooks because it’s really soothing to have someone read a book to you, and because you can multitask and still have a story told to you.

  110. Michelle commented on:

Audiobooks transform words on a page into something, real, fantastic, and wonderful :)

  111. Hannah commented on:

because i feel like i get more out of the story!

  112. Kelley (Another Novel Read) commented on:

Wow, you’re right, her narration is fantastic! I think I definitely need to get this entire series on audio. I can’t get enough of audiobooks! It’s so much better than listening to the radio on my long, boring commutes to and from work every day. It’s like I get to hang out with good friends! <3

  113. Ayah Assem commented on:

The reason why I love reading is because my mother used to read me books when I was younger, so listening to stories was the reason why I started reading and writing. An audio book is almost the same experience, don’t you think so ?!

  114. P commented on:

I love listening to audiobooks because they are great for car trips and I can listen to them in situations where it is impossible for me to read! Also, sometimes I like to have other people’s impressions on the characters.

I listen to audiobooks while I’m cleaning the house or walking the dogs. I can get twice the reading done this way!

  121. Heather commented on:

I listen to audiobooks primarily in the car on my way to and from work. It’s the perfect thing for people who have a hard time walking away from a book when it gets really good because you have to stop when you get to work whether you like or not ( and you know you won’t like it).

  122. Kira M commented on:

I’m so excited for Cress! I’ve listened to this entire series on audiobook, and I love it.

Because they make my 45 minute daily commute feel shorter!

  125. Karen Birol commented on:

Hi Marissa! I love you and The Lunar Chronicles!!!! You don’t know how much these books mean to me!!! I got to know this in the first quarter of 2013 and I know it was so rare in the Philippines so I told myself that I’ll wait for it and bought mine last Nov 30. Then when I finally read Allegiant, which was so heartbreaking for me, I immediately read Cinder and it made me so happy!! I’m a Disney kid so I grew up watching the princesses saved by the princes but yours is different. Girl power all the way! Your characters affect me so much!!! Again, I love you and your books!!!

P.S. please follow me on twitter. It would mean so much to me! Love you!

  126. Karen Birol commented on:

If ever I’ll win this will be my first audiobook!!! I hope fate will be on me. :”> &&&& I love Rebecca’s narration!!! Made me want to know more about Cress!!!

  127. Janos commented on:

Cress! That is all that needs to be said!

I love to listen to audiobooks because English isn’t my first language, and it gives me a great opportunity to better understand the language when spoken. It’s also nice to listen, instead of reading, for a change.

I love listening to audiobooks because they give me the ability to “read” while I’m doing other things. However, I still love having the books in my hand, so if I buy the audiobook, I’m definitely getting the physical copy too! I’m so excited for Cress!

Well, actually I have a love/hate relationship with audiobooks. I’ve listened to several brilliant ones (read by David Tennant :P ) and one really crappy audio adaptation, so I’m actually on the fence about them. But I’m sure the audiobook for Cress will totally ROCK!! <3 ^_^

I love audio books for several reasons. 1) It makes my commute to work more enjoyable and allows me to de-stress after work. 2) It gives me to read even more books while I wait for the world to invent cars that drive themselves or hovercrafts. 3) As a teacher listening to a book on take reminds me how important reading aloud is and how interesting you can make it 4) It keeps my mind off the fact that I hate doing housework, so I can actually get housework done.

I am in love with the Lunar Chronicles, and infatuated with your narrator, Rebecca Soler. I just finished listening to Scarlet, and am almost ready to scream until Cress comes out–but I don’t want to read it myself. I want Rebecca to read it to me!

I love audiobooks not only has it helped me to tackle my TBR list but it makes it easier to do my favorite activity(Reading) while cooking, cleaning, and working out I can make the time pass quicker getting lost in another world. Also I have found new books that I wouldn’t have really tried or thought to read before while waiting for new releases from the library and listened to genres I had never tried before and now have fallen in love with such as High Fantasy and Historical fiction. Many voice actors just bring a whole new dimension and breath life into so of my favorite characters and I can’t get enough of them.

I only tried listening to an audiobook once and I really enjoyed it. The reason is that I can listen to a book while doing (or not doing) anything. And also, in audiobooks I don’t need to guess on what the proper pronunciation of a certain word is. Yay for The Lunar Chronicles! You are awesomesauce! <3
