Gearing up for NaNoWriMo!

Posted on: 15th Oct 2013  /   Categorized: Nanowrimo

November is just around the corner, which means that writers everywhere are gearing up for the month of noveling insanity that is National Novel Writing Month! Many of you know that Cinder, Scarlet, Cress, and now Heartless all started life as NaNo novels. I’m a huge fan of the draft-now, revise-later mentality. On top of that, this is the first year in which I’m participating in a slightly more… official capacity.

Because the lovely folks at NaNoWriMo have asked me to be a part of their author advisory board! What does that mean? I’m not entirely sure. I suppose I’ll be advising, with whatever wisdom and peppiness I can offer.

Plus—next month I’ll be starting a brand new writing project!

Working title: Levana’s Tale: A Lunar Chronicles Novella

Summary: The story of how Levana, princess of Luna, came to be Winter’s stepmother, tried to kill Princess Selene, and ultimately became a queen with her eye set on being an empress. It will also offer some insight into why she’s so friggin’ crazy.

The twist here is that, as a novella, this story is not going to meet the NaNo 50,000-word requirement. I suspect it’ll be somewhere in the 30,000-35,000 word range. So I’ll probably rack up the extra wordage by continuing on with Winter revisions.

You know, all in a month’s work.

When will you all be able to read Levana’s Tale?

You will certainly be able to read this novella someday. My publisher is aware that I’m writing it and they’re very excited. We’ll most likely use it for some sort of promotion next year, when we start to gear up for the release of Winter. But I don’t know at this point when or where or how it will be released. I may post some fun teasers throughout NaNo though… we’ll see. 😉

And fellow novelists, feel free to add me to your buddy list, or post your NaNo plans in the comments!

I’m so excited you’re going to be on the author advisory board! And…Levana’s Tale?!?! Sweet! Sounds like an awesome NaNo plan. 🙂

I must be out of the loop (or just not a very good fan *for shame*.) I had no idea Cinder, Scarlet, and Cress started as Nano books! I’ve attempted NaNoWriMo a few years in a row (I’ve only known about it for three years), but usually always as a time to really focus on edits or writing on my current manuscript at the time. I’d love, in the future, to give it a shot on a completely new idea. 🙂

This year, I’ll be doing the same: working on my current manuscript–the second book in my dystopian series that will be coming out next year sometime. I’ll be gone half of November, though, so I’m not shooting for the full 50k.

Good luck this year! Looking forward to whatever being on the NaNo board means for you. [grin]

I just found out about NaNo this year (through you and a few other outhers’ blogs) and I attempted the July Camp. I got my 35,000 word goal (YAY!!!) but my book is not done yet.

This November I’m only going for 15,000 because of high school and all that, so I’m just going to continue where I left of at the end of camp. I was thinking of using the young writers program, so that way I could set my own wordcount goal.

    I can’t wait till November!

You’ll be on the author advisory board? Coolness! Levana’s Tale sounds awesome as well. Her story would definitely be interesting to read (and, I’m sure, to write).

I’m doing NaNoWriMo for the third time this year, and I’m very excited. I’ll be working on the fourth book in a series I’ve been writing mostly as NaNo novels. I can’t wait to get back to the characters and their adventures.

    Author Advisory Board!? AWESOME!

I’ll be writing part 2 of (what I’m embarrassed to say) last year’s project. I’m really excited to be finishing it though! This will be my fifth NaNoWriMo and I can’t wait for November. Although, I have a bunch of things I need to get done this month…. the life a book blogger…..

Nice! It’s always fun to get into the villains headspace and I’ve been dying to learn more about what happened to Selene/Cinder. NaNoWriMo sounds like an intense way to get a lot done in a short about of time! I might just have to check it out. Good luck to all attempting it 🙂

Congrats on the advisory board spot!

I just wanted to thank you for all of your posts concerning NaNoWriMo. I had never heard of it and your positive review prompted me to check it out. I am now signed up and ready to start my first year!

    Looks awesome!

I’m getting ready for NaNo as well. I’m already working on my story as a part of NaNoWarmUp, which Kat Zhang and Savannah Foley put together so I’m hoping to start NaNo with at least 25k.

I’m super excited to hear that we’ll be getting a new novella sometime, I can’t wait to learn more about Levana!

Will you ever publish Glitches, The Queen’s Army and the other Lunar Chronicles short stories together in a physical book?

  10. Adele commented on:

Please release earlier! And PLEASE write more short stories. One book with tons of short stories sound great! Could you release Winter earlier? Can’t wait till NaMoWrite second year here I come!

Me, again! I can’t get enough of this website and the FANTASTIC books by Miss Meyer. These are the best books I have read in my whole life! I can’t wait to read Levana’s Tale. Looks almost better than Cress and Winter. I really want to learn more about the series. Marissa, I hate to bug you again but could you send info about winter and cress to my email address please? If you can’t that’s totally okay. I can’t wait till NaMo starts, ready to write Book 2 in a series I started last year. Love Glitches and the Queens Army. Marissa, is there going to be a cinder movie? Any info on that? I have no idea if there is. Love all your books and upcoming books. You are like a totally cool and awesome writer. Keep Writing! Do you have future plans for more books?

That is very exciting and I can’t wait to read it! Last year was my first time participating, though I didn’t get to the 50k, but that’s ok, this year I am able to be more prepared since I know what to expect and have better planning. It’s really awesome they have you for the author advisory board! I’d say good luck in NaNo, but we all know you’ll finish 🙂
